Goals :
•organization of the academic world in France (Universities, CNRS, CNAP, UMR, etc.)/
comparison with academia abroad
• stakes and issues of post-doctoral positions, applying for a funded position vs. seeking
your own funding (MSCF, ESA research fellowships/ESO/JPL…)
•understand the challenges of gender equality in academia
•how to present your research as part of an application to an academic competition
•how to define a research project for an academic competition
•mentoring/teaching/vulgarizing : transmission of knowledge in academia

Methods :
Class is divided into 3 kinds of activities :
1) conferences : given by one of the teachers, they can include short zoom presentations
by guest researchers (e.g. CNRS past jury member, recent ERC winner)/Human
ressources team/Psychologist) in order to mix general facts and personal experience.
Conferences include tips, tools, links to online ressources and templates, video
tutorials, to remain as a tool box for future candidates

2) discussion & debates : starting with a few slides or a Wooclap quizz, a session of
discussion about a given topic. All discussion sessions will finish by a summary given by a
pair of volunteering students (following the exemple of the summary at the end of
« Time World » events conferences)

3) individual & small team writing : in small groups of students, focus on a given exercise
and finish with an oral restitution. Each session will be supported by a printed support
providing tips and ressources to help the students.

the facilitation of debates/workshops, of Alisson Bockelée, prevention advisor
at the Paris-PSL Observatory, and Marie-Laure Drobert, psychologist, contracted by the Paris Observatory.

Format : 15 hours (3 days)

Target audience : ED127 or other doctoral school students who aim to pursue
a career in academia, especially in France—even though the international
context will be part of the class. This class is especially intended for 2nd
and 3rd year PhD students. Students are expected to bring their own laptop.
